14 arrested in Assam’s Boko in connection with mob attack on cops

Four police personnel were injured when a mob attacked them following the arrest of a criminal involved in a rape case at Rongapani village under Sontoli police outpost of Boko police station on March 17.

GUWAHATI:

Altogether 14 people, including three minors were arrested in connection with a mob attack on police personnel at Bodola Bazar in Boko of lower Assam’s Kamrup district on March 19.

Four police personnel were injured when a mob attacked them following the arrest of a criminal involved in a rape case at Rongapani village under Sontoli police outpost of Boko police station on March 17.

The incident took place after a police team led by SI Deepak Deka, in-charge of Sontoli police outpost, arrested the criminal Munnabh Ali from Bodola Bazar under No 3 Dakhin Rongapani village and tried to bring him to the police outpost.

A case was registered against Munnabh Ali from Bodola Bazar under No 3 Dakhin Rongapani village on March 13 based on a complaint lodged by Ramisha Khatun in connection with a rape incident,” said Deka.

“When we tried to put him in our vehicle, some of his family members came out and started an altercation with us. Immediately, some more people including women, boys and girls started arguments with us and attacked us,” said SI Deepak Deka, in-charge, Sontoli poice outpost.

“They even tried to snatch our arms. Taking the advantage of the situation, the rape accused Munnabh Ali fled from the scene with the help of his supporters,” Deka also said.

Later, police launched another operation at Bodola Bazar under 3 No. Dakhin Rongapani village and arrested 14 people in connection with the mob attack.

“Three minors have been forwarded to Juveline Justice Board and the adults are in our custody,” said Phanindra Nath, officer-in-charge, Boko police station.

The arrested have been identified as Jiwan Necha, Hajera Khatun, Jesmina Khatun, Anuwar Hussain, Azizul Haque, Samsul Haque, Tarachand Ali, Amjad Ali, Ajmal Haque, Nur Mohammad Ali and Omar Ali.

A case bearing Boko PS case no 124/2023 under section 353/325/147/148/149/394/342/307 of IPC has been registered in connection with the mob attack.

“Investigation is still on. More people are likely to be arrested in this connection,” Nath added.

The key accused Munnabh Ali is still absconding.
