2023 election will be of turncoats: Ampareen

SHILLONG:

Suspended Congress legislator from East Shillong Ampareen Lyngdoh has said that the 2023 assembly elections will be of “turncoats”.

“Let me tell you something, I am not the only turncoat. Here everybody is turning coats everywhere, so 2023 is going to be an election of multiple turncoats. Let us not get into these unnecessary allegations,” Lyngdoh said.

The last five Congress MLAs, including Lyngdoh, were recently suspended by the AICC for supporting the National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition government which also includes the BJP.

Lyngdoh said that she was actually a victim of circumstances.

She said she would fight the upcoming elections with her head held high just as has done in the past four.

“If my people still support me, they will decide my fate. Not parties which are calling me to contest on their ticket,” she added.

She also said that she has come to the conclusion that no matter what jersey one is wearing one needs to work hard and that one needs to remain focused and fight against all odds.

“And that is something, which by God’s grace and the love of my people, I have been able to do this far,” she added.

Lyngdoh said that when she first contested an election she was not given a ticket and she had to look for one.

According to her, in her second election too she was not given a ticket and she had to look elsewhere.

However, her third and fourth elections were peaceful.

“Now the drama has begun again, but people can say what they want; circumstances around my personal politics have always been very difficult. It could be because of dislike for a woman to be constantly around in politics. I have no idea, but it is something which baffles me,” Lyngdoh added.

Lyngdoh first contested the assembly election in 2008 on a United Democratic Party (UDP) ticket after she was denied a Congress ticket. A year later in 2009, she quit the UDP and in the by-poll to follow she contested from the Congress. In 2013 and 2018 she again contested from the Congress. Suspended recently from the Congress, there are reports that she will be contesting from the NPP in 2023.
