All-party meet on law and order situation today

Leaders of different political parties, including opposition All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), are expected to attend the meeting.

SHILLONG:

The state government has convened an all-party meet on November 28 to discuss the fallout of the Mukroh village firing incident on the law and order situation in the state.

Five residents of the village and an Assam forest guard were killed after Assam Police personnel opened `unprovoked’ fire on a group of villagers pon November 22.

Leaders of different political parties, including opposition All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), are expected to attend the meeting.

On November 24, Sangma had led a cabinet delegation and met the Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who had assured that Centre will institute a CBI probe into the incident.

The delegation had also briefed Shah that the root cause of the entire tension that has been building up in that area and other areas has to do with the border dispute between the two states.

Sangma had said that due to the unfortunate incident, the ongoing border talks had hit a certain hurdle while asserting that “…there is a lot of area that trust has to be built and hence the intervention of the government of India will be necessary.”

The state government had also sought the intervention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) while terming the Assam police action as violation of human rights.

Meanwhile, opposition AITC national spokesperson Saket Gokhale slammed Shah for keeping quiet over the Mukroh firing incident.

“Home Minister AmitShah hasn’t said a word about the tragic Mukroh firing on Assam-Meghalaya border where 5 tribals were shot dead by Assam Police. He’s busy campaigning for Gujarat & Delhi MCD along with @himantabiswa. Are lives of people in the North-East so cheap for BJP?” he tweeted.
