Assam engineer Kamlesh Talukdar’s body found at Tupul landslide site

GUWAHATI:

Eleven days after railway engineer Kamlesh Talukdar went missing in the Tupul landslide incident at Noney district of Manipur June 29, his mortal remains were finally recovered on July 9.

Talukdar was engaged in the construction of the Jiribam-Imphal railway line at Tupul Railway Station.

He hails from Agamoni Kaldoba in Lower Assam’s Dhubri district.

Talukdar’s mortal remains will be brought to his native village on July 11 morning.

Talukdar reached his workplace from home on June 21. The news of the recovery of Kamlesh’s body has created a mournful atmosphere in the family.

His mother and seven-month-old pregnant wife lost all patients after getting the report of the recovery of his body.

With this recovery, the death toll in the landslide rose to 50.

 Speaking to The Meghalayan, Noney SDO Solomon Fimate said that 11 people are still reported missing at the site, and that search operations are underway to find them.

Twenty-nine Army personnel and 20 civilians were among the deceased in the worst natural disaster that hit the state and eighteen others were injured.

Over 880 personnel, including those of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the police, the Assam Rifles and local volunteers, have been deployed in the search operation.

Over 43 excavators have been used to clear the debris which blocked the Ijei river, forming dam-like storage and threatening the people living nearby.
