Assam lifts Meghalaya travel restrictions, tourist taxi to run from tomorrow

As the advisory was lifted the police removed the barricade at Deegharkhal in the Cachar district of Barak Valley allowing the Assam registration vehicles, including fuel tankers to enter Meghalaya from Sunday afternoon.

GUWAHATI:

The movement of tourist taxis from Guwahati to Shillong will begin on November 28 as the Assam Police lifted the travel restrictions to Meghalaya on November 27 afternoon.

The travel advisory was imposed by the Assam Police against Meghalaya following the Mukroh firing incident in which six persons, including a forest guard from Assam, were killed on November 22.

“We have lifted the travel advisory against Meghalaya and removed barricades at Jorabat due to the improved situation,” said Partha Sarathi Mahanta, Joint Commissioner of Police, Guwahati City.

“Vehicles from Assam are now allowed to enter Meghalaya, Mahanta said.

“Wherever necessary, vehicles are being escorted. In other vulnerable areas, police patrolling has been provided,” he said.

However, the movement of tourist taxis is yet to start from Guwahati to Shillong even as some private vehicles were seen plying to the neighbouring state.

“The police lifted the travel advisory and removed the barricade this afternoon. But no taxi was run from Guwahati to Shillong today. We are likely to start plying taxis from tomorrow depending on the situation,” said Gul Mohammad Khan, general secretary, All Guwahati Tourist Taxi Drivers Union (AGTTDU), Guwahati.

As the advisory was lifted the police removed the barricade at Deegharkhal in the Cachar district of Barak Valley allowing the Assam registration vehicles, including fuel tankers to enter Meghalaya from Sunday afternoon.

“The advisory has been lifted after assessment of the prevailing situation and discussion between Assam Police and Meghalaya Police. We have been directed by higher authorities to remove barricades. Accordingly, the vehicles are allowed entry into Meghalaya,” said Numal Mahanta, Superintendent of Police, Cachar district.
