TURA:

Bike lifters are once again upping their ante in Garo Hills with a third motorcycle stolen in less than a month, this November.

A motorcycle was stolen from the owner’s house in Dadenggre town of West Garo Hills on Wednesday night.

Prior to this, another two motorcycles have disappeared from different parts of West Garo Hills in the last two weeks, confirmed Tura police.

A few years back, the number of motorcycle and four wheeler pickup truck thefts were extremely high with almost two to three vehicles disappearing in a single week.

Most of the targeted vehicles were motorcycles like Bajaj Pulsars that are quickly smuggled into Bangladesh through the Garo Hills border, while Mahindra SUV Boleros and Pickup trucks were driven out to Assam enroute to Nagaland where a big market existed for high demand vehicles like four wheel drives.

Several months ago, the kingpin of a gang behind multiple lifting of motorcycles was netted by police in an extensive operation that spread all the way to neighbouring Assam.

The accused spent time in jail but was recently granted bail by the courts.

Police are not ruling out a connection between the release of the kingpin and the sudden spurt in bike lifting taking place in Garo Hills.
