BJP bags 3 out of 4 seats in Tripura by-polls; Cong won one

Congress candidate Sudip Roy Barman is leading from 6-Agartala

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won three out of four seats in the Tripura by-polls. Tripura chief minister and BJP leader Manik Saha won the assembly poll from Town Bardowali constituency by a margin of 6,104 votes, the Election Commission said, on June 26.

Congress candidate Sudip Roy Barman won the prestigious Agartala seat by 3,163 votes. The BJP won Town Bordowali, Jubarajnagar and Surma seats and workers were seen in a jubiliant mood after chief minister Manik Saha’s victory.

The counting of four assembly seats in which bye-elections were held commenced today morning at 8 am amidst tight security. The bye-poll in these assembly constituencies was held on June 23.

After seven rounds of counting, Congress candidate Sudip Roy Barman was leading from 6-Agartala while Saha was ahead at 8-Town Bordowali. In 57-Jubarajnagar and in 46-Surma the saffron party was leading.

Former BJP minister, Roy Barman, who contested from Congress in 6-Agarala Assembly Constituency, received 17, 431 votes, while his BJP’s Ashok Sinha received 14, 268 and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) received 6, 808.

In the Jubarajnagar assembly constituency BJP’s Malina Debnath received 18,769 votes, CPIM received 14, 197 while Congress bagged 1,440 votes.

In the Surma assembly constituency, BJP’s Swapna Das Paul was leading with 10,956 votes, while CPIM is trailing with 5362 votes. The Congress, however, didn’t file any candidates from the seat.
