Clarion call for voters reverberates across Shillong

To mark the occasion, a mini-marathon - Run for Sure was organised by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer in the morning which was later followed by a programme with the hashtag "Vote for Sure" at Old Assembly premises in Khyndai Lad.

SHILLONG:

The National Voters’ Day was celebrated in Meghalaya amid consciousness and enthusiasm with hardly a month away before the state goes to polls on February 27.

To mark the occasion, a mini-marathon – Run for Sure was organised by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer in the morning which was later followed by a programme with the hashtag “Vote for Sure” at Old Assembly premises in Khyndai Lad.

Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Chief Secretary DP Wahlang said the purpose of celebrating this day was to sensitise, disseminate information and spread awareness among the young voters on the importance of the right to franchise and the role of the youth.

Similarly, Chief Electoral Officer FR Kharkongor said that the day represents the single largest gathering across the country and, it epitomises the role of the Election Commission in ensuring elections are inclusive and voter-friendly. This day emphasises on individual and civic duty to vote, he added.

Furthermore, he stated that as citizens, it is our civic duty to cast our vote, adding that we do not have the right to complain if we do not put aside some time to go to the polling station to exercise our franchise.

Terming the elections as a festival, he said Meghalaya contributes to this successful narrative and will add another glorious chapter after February 27 and March 2.
