SHILLONG:
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has welcomed the passing of the women reservation bill that seeks to reserve 33 percent of seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies, stating that it is a great move towards women empowerment in the country.
“I am sure that this will lead to a very positive strengthening and representation of women in the parliament and state assemblies. As a state having a matrilineal society, I fully support the move,” Sangma said.
The chief minister informed that a meeting will be called on it soon to take official decision to pass it.
Asked if women will take up politics seriously given that the bill is in place now, Sangma said that since reservation is there now, the bill will be a reason for women to come forward as men cannot contest on those reserved seats.
