CM slams Mukul Sangma for failing to create new blocks, sub-divisions during his tenure

Speaking to reporters, Conrad said that the development being brought by the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government has has not gone well with the opposition, who out of frustration are terming them to to be “political gimmick”.

SHILLONG:

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, on December 2, slammed the Leader of Opposition (LO), Mukul Sangma, for his failure to create new blocks and sub-divisions during his eight years of service as a chief minister.

Speaking to reporters, Conrad said that the development being brought by the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government has has not gone well with the opposition, who out of frustration are terming them to to be “political gimmick”.

According to the CM, the main objective of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government is to create new community and rural development (C&RD) blocks and civil sub-divisions (CSDs) so that administration can be brought closer to the people.

Further reacting to Mukul’s allegation that NPP-led government’s decision to inaugurate newly created blocks and civil sub-divisions is a “panic reaction” after seeing their election graft is declining, the chief minister said, “If only the LO had spoken to those people and realized their pain and the challenges, he will come to know that they are very happy with this development.”

He further questioned the LO’s failure when he was chief minister for 8 long years by saying, “May be when he was chief minister for 8 years, he could have given them those blocks but I guess he did not want to do anything at that time for those people.”

“However, we (MDA government) have realized those people are facing a lot of challenges and they have to travel for hours and hours to reach to the administrative headquarters to be able to get just basic services like certificates and other block services or subdivision services – this is towards our goal and our endeavor and our decision to ensure we take administration closer to the people and it is going in that line itself,” the chief minister said.

“Therefore, it is improper to look at these as a political stance, but it should be seen that development is being done at the grass root people. The fact that development is getting closer to the people and administration is getting closer to the people is something that I think should not be criticized at all,” the CM added.

Conrad told the opposition to go and enquire from the people living in Patharkhmah, Namdong, Rambrai, Rongjeng and others on the kind of challenges they faced just to get basic services that the government provides.

“Hence, those who criticize are the people who don’t understand the pain that the common citizens go through. The government wants to take administration closer to the people, and I am sure that the people of those areas where developments have taken place, will realize its benefits and understand that this will make a huge difference in their lives,” the chief minister further asserted.
