Congress for review of quota policy

Speaking to reporters after attending the meeting of all the political parties, Mylliem legislator, Ronnie V Lyngdoh said that reservation policy has been there for 51 years and it was high time to review it.

SHILLONG:

The Congress on Wednesday said that there is a need to review the reservation policy.

Speaking to reporters after attending the meeting of all the political parties, Mylliem legislator, Ronnie V Lyngdoh said that reservation policy has been there for 51 years and it was high time to review it.

“The employment and population scenario has changed drastically as compared to fifty-one years ago,” Lyngdoh said.

According to him, the Congress will sit as a party and deliberate on the issue even as he stated that since it is a national party, only the MLAs cannot decide.

“We as a party, including the legislators, will deliberate on the issue,” he said.

Lyngdoh said that during the meeting chaired by Cabinet Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, the Congress had suggested the setting up of an expert committee to study the views, opinions, and suggestions of political parties on the issue.

The Mylliem MLA said that the proposed expert committee should include demographic experts, economic experts, social experts, legal experts, and constitutional experts.

“This issue (reservation policy) is very sensitive and therefore we have to take both the constitutional and legal validities into account,” he said.

Meanwhile, Umsning legislator Celestine Lyngdoh said that any decision taken by the party should be far-sighted and not done in haste.
