Contraband worth over Rs 1 crore seized in Tripura, two held

The drugs were seized during various search operations conducted by the police ahead of the Republic Day.

In the past 24 hours, contraband items worth more than Rs 1 crore were seized at two different locations in Tripura, the police informed on January 24.

The drugs were seized during various search operations conducted by the police ahead of the Republic Day.

On Monday afternoon, Government Railway Police Force (GRPF) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) seized cannabis from an Agartala-Silchar-bound passenger train at Dharmanagar railway station in Tripura’s North district.

According to the railway police, 10kg of dried cannabis packed in five bundles were seized from a single trolley bag. Laxman Debbarma, an RPF official at Dharmanagar railway station, said the value of the seized cannabis in the international market would be around Rs 1 lakh. However, the police could not make any arrest in the incident.

In another operation on the wee hours of Sunday night, the Tripura Police seized 1kg heroin and arrested two persons from a house in the Balurchor area in Agartala.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Urban) Anirban Das said, “Based on that tip-off, the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Amtali, Ashish Dasgupta along with other police personnel conducted a raid at the house and seized 64 small boxes containing heroin.”

The official informed that the seized heroin would be worth Rs 1 crore in the -international market.

“We arrested two persons – Narayan Chandra Sarkar and his son Rakesh Sarkar. Currently, we are interrogating them and this is one of the biggest seizures in the state,” the additional SP said.

Lauding the role of Tripura Police in the operations, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb posted in his popular social media handle, “Another big success for #NashaMukt Tripura.  64 cases of suspected heroin weighing approx 916.81gm was seized from Bhattapukur balurchar. Under AD Nagar Police station, Agartala. Gratitude & congratulations to concerned officers of West Tripura Police on this commendable job (sic).”
