CPI-M launches massive rally in Tripura; urges public to resort to resistance to save democracy

Former chief minister Manik Sarkar said that resistance is the only option to create a new beginning.

AGARTALA:

The Communist Party of India – Marxist (CPI – M) in Tripura held a mammoth public rally on February 24 against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government’s “divisive politics”.

Over a thousand party workers gathered at the rally in Swami Vivekananda Stadium, Agartala, ahead of the scheduled two-day CPI-M 23rd Conference beginning tomorrow.

While addressing the gathering, former chief minister Manik Sarkar said, “Resistance is the only option to create a new beginning.”

“Narendra Modi and Amit Shah lured the people of Tripura, for which they came to power in 2018. After forming the government, people have suffered from a severe employment crisis. There is no fresh recruitment or regularisation, and they have only carried out attacks on every institution. The only option is ‘resistance’, without which there is no alternative. Every person needs to come out of their homes to intensify the protest,” he said.

Also present at the rally were former general-secretary of CPI-M, Prakash Karat, general-secretary of CPI-M, Sitaram Yechury and CPI-M state committee secretary, Jitendra Chowdhury, among others.

Karat alleged that the Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is using the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) to throttle the voice of the people.

“They (the BJP) slap UAPA on whoever raises a voice against the government. Since the formation of the Modi government in 2014, there is a direct attack on democracy, the Constitution and secularism,” he said, and additionally, blamed IB, CBI and ED for harassing and arresting the opposition party leaders.

Yechury claimed that instead of speaking “for the common masses”, the Prime Minister has given more importance to divisive issues like “hijab”, “love jihad” and “gau Raksha” (cow protection).

“Time has come to fight against this divisive agenda and save democracy. The ruling state government is destroying peace and harmony of tribal and non-tribal people living in Tripura, and only indulges in vote bank politics,” Yechury added.

Meanwhile, Chowdhury informed that since February 23, BJP-backed goons have tried to prevent party workers from attending the public rally.
