Doctors’ body condemns assault on medical officer in Tripura

A statement issued by the doctors’ body claimed that at the instigation of some “dishonest” local people, the common people of the village were provoked to vandalise the hospital and they were directed from a nearby market

AGARTALA:

The All Tripura Government Doctors Association (ATGDA) have demanded strict action against the perpetrators responsible for assaulting an on duty medical officer at Manikpur Primary Health Centre on May 4.

In a statement issued on May 5, ATGDA condemned the attack on one Dr Pranab Debbarma, medical officer-in-charge, and termed the act as “barbaric” and “heinous”.

“The vandalism of the government hospital and the attack on the health workers have shocked not only the medical community but also the peace-loving people. By the grace of God, Debbarma has survived, but it goes without saying that the attack was premeditated to destroy the hospital,” the press statement read.

The statement further claimed that at the instigation of some “dishonest” local people, the common people of the village were provoked to vandalise the hospital and they were directed from a nearby market.

“The doctors and other health workers on duty cannot be held responsible for the tragic deaths of children suffering from the deadly malaria epidemic. Although the deaths of the children are unfortunate and tragic, the organisation, as always, is with the affected health workers and their families and is keeping a close eye on all the necessary treatment,” the statement added.

The health workers association have urged the authorities to take cognisance of the matter and give exemplary punishment to the culprits.
