SHILLONG:
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, on May 2, said that that load-shedding in the state is a result of elections, electoral procedures, a national power shortage, among other things.
He established that 2023 had been a challenging and tough year for everyone since the state held legislative assembly elections and load-shedding couldn’t be scattered out across 4-5 months thus it was condensed and exacerbated into one particular month.
He said that there are significant financial issues at the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) department and that the government is making efforts to assist them. However, the reformation process has started, which is a positive development for the future.
“In the current situation, the only respite is if we receive some kind of good rainfall or reduce the power to a slightly more reasonable rate because the rates are high because of the overall shortage in supply in the national level also,” the chief minister said.
Furthermore, he pleaded with the people to have patience with the government during these trying times, stating, “Yes I understand this is a tough time, please do bear in such challenging times, we are working towards minimizing the discomfort that you are having by managing the timings of the different load-shedding in different area based on a pattern… post this phase, we don’t expect such an extreme phase to come.”
