Farmers have reiterated their opposition to the Umngot Hydro Electric Project, while demanding a notification from the state government on scrapping it

In a press statement issued here on March 25, the farmers claimed that the project will affect the agricultural land, and will be a hindrance to those earning their livelihood through tourism activities along the Wah Umngot.

The public meeting was attended by leaders of the Joint Action Committee against Umngot Hydro Electric Project consisting of various pressure groups such as KSU, JSU, FKJGP, HNYF, TUR and Meghalaya Rural Tourism Forum and leaders of Elaka Darrang.

It may be recalled that Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government in December had scrapped the 210-mega watts Umngot Hydro Electric Project (HEP) following stiff opposition from the people of Khasi and Jaintia Hills region.

However, the anti-dam camp is not satisfied, asserting that they need the assurance in writing.
