Fishing competitions can be taxed if brought under ambit of law: Kyrmen Shylla

Speaking to media persons in the city, he said that though fishing is a hobby or an activity taken up by the rural population, if it is taken up as a gambling activity, it can be taxed and brought under the ambit of law if the government considers to do so.

SHILLONG:

Cabinet Minister Kyrmen Shylla, on April 5, said that the fisheries sector can greatly contribute to the state exchequer if proper steps are taken to mitigate the sector, and brought under the ambit of law.

Speaking to media persons in the city, he said that though fishing is a hobby or an activity taken up by the rural population, if it is taken up as a gambling activity, it can be taxed and brought under the ambit of law if the government considers to do so.

“Fishing is something which people have been doing through ages, but when it comes to gambling, I must say it has to as per the law, and once included under an Act, organisers can be taxed,” he said.

When apprised about the involvement of a lot of money in fishing competitions and whether the government is aware of this, Shylla said that if the organisers, through the means of competitions, are earning revenue, they should also contribute to the coffer of the state.

“Whenever people are organising fishing competitions, they are earning, so they should not mind paying to the state government to ensure that whatever they are doing is legal. So once brought under the purview of the law, they can be taxed,” Shylla said.
