SHILLONG:

One person was arrested and several perpetrators identified on October 31 in connection to the assault on people during the protest march against unemployment in the state called by the Federation of Khasi Jaintia Garo PeopleĀ (FKJGP) on Friday.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a programme, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said, “One person has been arrested and three FIRs have been lodged. A large number of people, I know the number but I do not want to give it out, have been identified as miscreants who attacked innocent people, and necessary action will be taken against them.”

The CM was attending a law and order meeting earlier in the day to review the incident that took place on Friday, and instructions were given to the police to take necessary action if such incidents take place in the future.

He also informed that three people were injured and they were given the required treatment, and though the injuries were not serious in nature, the people were still hurt. He further said that two to three vehicles, mostly autos, scooters, and one gypsy belonging to the army, were slightly damaged, but there was no major damage to any personal vehicle or asset of the government.

Stating that such incidents come as a surprise, Sangma said that out of 1500 plus people who attended the protest march, there were few who resorted to violent activities.

Deputy CM Reaction:

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on October 31 said the Secretariat is open to any organization that wants to discuss any issue with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma or with him instead of resorting to violence.

Tynsong, who is also the national vice-president of National People’s Party (NPP), was referring to the violent public march against unemployment held on Friday that was organised by the FKJGP.

“If there are any suggestions, the door of the Secretariat is open. The door is not there at Malki ground or Police Bazaar. But the door of the Secretariat is open, please come and do not waste time in assaulting people. This is a strong message from me. We are ready to meet when there is an appointment, give us suggestions and we will discuss it,” Tynsong added.
