TURA:

The portfolios of the new Executive Committee of GHADC headed by CEM Albinush Marak have been announced with two MDCs whose support played a crucial role in ensuring stability for the ruling NPP alliance being rewarded and given charge of various departments of the council.

Rebel Trinamool MDC, Stevie Marak, who crossed over from the opposition camp, has been given the portfolios of agriculture, sports and youth affairs, the lucrative sand market and cattle feeding (fodder). He represents Boldamgre MDC constituency which is part of former chief minister Mukul Sangma’s bastion currently held by his daughter Miani D Shira.

Another rebel MDC who switched from the Congress to the regional United Democratic Party, Ashahel D Shira, has been made the executive member for forests and environment, water conservation and catchment area development and jhum control. Shira was elected on a Congress ticket from Batabari constituency in April last year, but left the party in protest after he was denied the ticket to contest the Rajabala assembly by-election, last October.

While CEM Albinush Marak retains the all-important finance, parliamentary affairs and general administration departments, his deputy CEM from the Garo National Council party, Nikman Marak, has once again been allotted the Land and Revenue department, among others.

Two Independent MDCs, Nathawal S Marak and Arbinstone B Marak, have also been rewarded with the portfolios of civil works and Haat with cattle market, respectively.

The NPP MDCs who have secured berths and given portfolios are Sengbath R Marak (Rural Administration, ferry ghats and fisheries), Henen R Sangma (Tourism, reformation and coordination), Linekar K Sangma (Transport, printing and stationary), Grahambell A Sangma (Taxation and water works), Anseng A Sangma (Rural development, art and culture, resource mobilisation).
