Good Samaritans

By The Editor

World Economic Forum Annual Meeting was held at Davos, Switzerland starting from Monday January 16 and according to rights group Oxfam International, the richest one per cent of India now own more than 40 per cent of country’s total wealth while bottom half of population together share just three per cent of wealth. It added that combined wealth of India’s 100 richest has touched US Dollars 660 billion (Rs 54.12 lakh crore), an amount that could fund the entire Union Budget for more than 18 months. Oxfam has suggested stark figures which India has to properly take into account so that benefits will percolate down to the poorest sections of society. The Constitution of India, adopted and enacted by Constituent Assembly on the twenty sixth day of November 1949, amongst other things stressed on Justice, social, economic and political, and to promote among them all fraternity assuring the dignity of the individual. What subsequently followed was that January 26, 1950 marked the first Republic Day of the nation which was celebrated with pomp and grandeur. After 73 years the nation has to introspect and come out with fresh vigour and resolution by publicly committing itself to welfare and security of all its citizens on the 74th Republic Day Anniversary, January 26, 2023.

However, India is a vast nation with huge population and so disparities are bound to occur no matter what which, therefore, calls for attention of every concerned citizen. ‘Anokha Mall’, Raheem Nagar, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh operated by 48 year-old Dr. Ahmed Raza Khan with most of donors being doctors is notable example indeed in which people can come and take away warm clothes or other accessories of their choice during cold winter mouths of December, January and February. At ‘Anokha Mall’ persons taking woolen clothes can easily enter as if he or she is entering shopping mall, see and check them and then take them as per their choice. Besides clothes, shoes, sandals, suitcases, school uniforms, blankets and quilts are also being kept for poor and needy. The mall is operated by staff of four persons working daily form 10 am to 6pm and last year about 3,000-4,000 persons availed of such opportunities. Most of beneficiaries are rickshaw pullers, labourers and slum dwellers and items are ensured that they are clean and fit to be used. Vigilance is maintained so that unscrupulous elements cannot take undue advantage by taking clothes and selling them in market.

The word ‘Anokha’, Khan said means unique and the mall is really remarkable where deserving people can enter freely and take home any items they need without feeling that they are begging for alms. Well-to-do and kind people seeing the noble motive of the operators headed by Dr.Khan wholeheartedly come forward to support and donate generously.
