SHILLONG:
The government is exploring the proposal for raising new battalions to strengthen the state’s police organization.
Admitting to have discussed the matter at the Conference of Superintendents of Police and Commandants on July 13, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, however, said that the decision will have a lot of financial implications.
“Therefore, we have to study the proposal and discussion is on but we have not taken a final decision yet,” said Sangma.
The police department had expressed the need to raise the seventh and eighth police battalions. In June last year, the chief minister had said the Centre will have to support the state in terms of a certain percentage for raising these battalions but after a year, the entire financial impact will fall on the state government to run them.
“…so, with the initial investment, which is not that big compared to the overall impact in the next 15-30 years, we have to examine all the aspects,” Sangma had said.
