Govt mulling resolution to ban uranium mining

Decision after examining all aspects, said Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.

SHILLONG:

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, on August 4, said that the government will examine the possibility of passing a resolution to ban uranium mining in the state.

“We have not examined that aspect (but) we will examine it and we will take necessary steps accordingly,” said the Chief Minister.

Recently, several pressure groups had demanded the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government to pass an official resolution in the assembly urging the Centre to close down any proposal to mine uranium in the state.

On August 2, deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong had reiterated the government’s stand to not allow mining of uranium in the state.

“Our stand is very clear, the MDA government will not allow uranium mining to take place in the state of Meghalaya,” Tynsong had assured.

Meanwhile on August 3, the Atomic Minerals Directorate (AMD) North East Region, Shillong, had said that there has been no attempt by the Centre to proceed with mining of uranium in Meghalaya.

This was informed by its regional director of AMD, P Kumar to a delegation of the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) during a meeting held here.

“He (Kumar) told us that there is no attempt by the Centre to further mine uranium in the state. As of now, Meghalaya is out of the list of the AMD in the Northeast,” HSPDP president, KP Pangniang, had informed the press during a press conference on Wednesday.
