Govt plans to inaugurate new assembly building by September, says Speaker

May get funds from the Centre for construction, he said.

SHILLONG:

The Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Metbah Lyngdoh, on Wednesday said that the construction of the new assembly building at Mawdiangdiang will be completed by the end of August and the government plans to inaugurate it by September.

“We intend to complete it by July, and commissioning and testing will be done in a month’s time… end of August,” he said, after a review of the construction work.

Expressing satisfaction on the progress of the work, Lyngdoh said that a lot of effort has gone into the construction of the new building, but a lot more needs to be done to ensure it is completed as per the schedule.

Divulging micro details about the ongoing construction work, Lyngdoh said that it was a relief that the crane (one-of-its-kind in India) used in lifting the fabricated structure for the dome has completed about 75 per cent of the work.

“The construction work of the minaret, which is the top part of the dome, will begin next week,” he said.

He also said the Centre would provide funds and that the state government has held discussions in this regard with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. “I can say that we will be getting funds from the central government,” he said.

The heads of Public Works department, Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited, National Informatics Centre, Forests and Environment, amongst others, attended the meeting.
