Govt ‘unmoved’ by VPP’s call for sit-in over reservation policy

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, on May 16, said political parties can say what they want to but the government has to follow procedure and “that is precisely what the government is doing; procedures will be followed in all aspects.”

SHILLONG:

The Meghalaya Government is “unmoved” by the sit-in demonstration call made by Voice of the People Party (VPP) over the state reservation policy.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, on May 16, said political parties can say what they want to but the government has to follow procedure and “that is precisely what the government is doing; procedures will be followed in all aspects.”

The VPP will be holding a sit-in demonstration on May 17 on the need to put on hold all recruitment processes in the state till the state job reservation policy and the implementation of the roster system is reviewed by an expert committee.

“We have told everybody that the government is preparing a detailed presentation and this, once seen, I am sure everybody will be clear as to what it is; all doubts will be cleared,” the chief minister said.

Sangma also informed that a cabinet presentation on the issue will be held on May 17 evening, followed by a meeting with all the partners of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) on May 18 and an all-party discussion on May 19.

Meanwhile, the discussion with all civil society groups, comprising of NGOs, church leaders and rangbah shnong, will be held next week since it would take some time to create a space to accommodate everyone, Sangma added.

Asserting that presentation will be an eye-opener, the chief minister said, “A lot of people don’t understand what a roster is. A roster is a very complicated yet a simple thing to understand. It is complicated but once anybody sees the presentation, they will understand better.”
