Govt will not allow any construction by Assam within Meghalaya: CM

Stating that he will review the situation and necessary action will be taken if it needs to be done, he said that he has had multiple discussions with Sarma in the last two days and will have further discussions in the coming days to ensure that no instigation occurs.

SHILLONG:

Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, said that the state government will will not allow any kind of construction by Assam government within the jurisdiction of Meghalaya, and take up the matter with Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on the reconstruction of Assam Forest Beat House at Mukroh.

“Anything within the jurisdiction of Meghalaya, if it is being done by any other government or autonomous body, will not be allowed, if it is done within the jurisdiction of Meghalaya,” Sangma told reporters on December 20.

Stating that he will review the situation and necessary action will be taken if it needs to be done, he said that he has had multiple discussions with Sarma in the last two days and will have further discussions in the coming days to ensure that no instigation occurs.

He added that talks will take place at the highest level from both sides.

Sangma went on to say that Border outposts have been sanctioned at Mukroh and a platoon has been stationed there and it has been regularised.

Clarifying the confusion, he said that outposts will be in Barato and border outposts in Mukroh.

It may be mentioned that the Dorbar Shnong of Mukroh along with members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Monday sought appointment with Sangma to inform him that Assam Forest department has reconstructed the beat house that was destroyed by the Mukroh public a day after the shooting on November 22.

There were allegations that residents of Mukroh were harassed when they refused to pay to the Assam forest officials.

The Mukroh shooting incident claimed the lives of 5 residents of Mukroh and one Assam police personnel.
