Govt working on Jowai garbage disposal issue

“We are on the job to acquire new places and in the meantime, we are making arrangements for temporary dumping only. So we have identified 3-4 places but some of the locals are against it.”

SHILLONG:

Minister in charge of Municipal Administration Department Sniawbhalang Dhar has said that the department is trying its best to solve the waste disposal problem in Jowai while also requesting the locals to bear with the government.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, he said, “We are on the job to acquire new places and in the meantime, we are making arrangements for temporary dumping only. So we have identified 3-4 places but some of the locals are against it.”

Stating that the officers are working hard on the issue, he said that though the government has identified the dumping ground yet there was resistance from the people.
He said that officers from time to time would conduct awareness programmes and request people to cooperate with the government instead of criticising it.

Dhar has assured the opposing groups that the sanitary landfill will adopt scientific processes and there will be no harm for people.

It may be mentioned that the piles of garbage are left unattended at Jowai market places. The Jowai garbage issue was much debated in the recently-concluded Budget session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
