Group fight between Kukis and Meiteis in Shillong, 16 apprehended

East Khasi Hills superintendent of police Sylvester Nongtnger informed that following theĀ  violence in Manipur between Kukis and Meiteis, a spillover was seen today in Shillong when at about 5.30 pm Laitumkhrah police station receivedĀ  information of a group fightĀ  at Nongrim Hills near Mizo Morden School.

As many as 16 persons belonging to Kukis and Meiteis were apprehended after they were indulging in a group fight in the city on May 4 evening.

East Khasi Hills superintendent of police Sylvester Nongtnger informed that following theĀ  violence in Manipur between Kukis and Meiteis, a spillover was seen today in Shillong when at about 5.30 pm Laitumkhrah police station receivedĀ  information of a group fightĀ  at Nongrim Hills near Mizo Morden School.

Police rushed toĀ the area and foundĀ two persons of oneĀ community manhandled by another community.

ā€œTo prevent the situation from getting aggravated, EKH Police has apprehended and bound down 16 persons under Section 107 CrPC of both the communities for formenting trouble,ā€ Nongtnger said. Ā 

Meanwhile, the SP said stringent measures will be taken on those wanting to vitiate the peace in the city.

Taking cognizance of the violent situation in Manipur, the Khasi Students’ Union has written to Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma to reach out to the students from the state who are affected by the ongoing turmoil in Manipur and the union has also called for peace and tranquility on the region.
