Guv’s address fail to highlight state’s issues: Shangpliang

Debating on the Governor’s address, Trinamool Congress legislator, Himalaya Shangpliang said that the Governor’s address fails to mention the failure and maintaining law and order in the state, regarding measures to improve the safety and security of women and children, unemployment, drug menace in the city, education and health sector.

“The government needs to understand causes of our youths joining militancy outfits,” he said during the budget session on Monday.

Shangpliang said that the dissatisfaction of the youth in the policies and intervention with regards to employment and education is a concerning matter.

He said that urgency to address the issues will automatically solve the issue of law and order in the state.

Speaking on education, he said that there are two government schools in Mawsynram constituency– Lalpani and Betgora that are deprived of roofs and windows.

DRUG MENACE IN STATE

On the drug menace in the state which has increased amongst the youth. “In 2019, a study conducted by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in collaboration with the national drug dependence treatment centre and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi showed that Meghalaya has identified 11, 420 injecting drug users.”

He suggested that Opioid Substitution Therapy should be set up in every CHC at the earliest.

“Every CHC should have separate detoxing centre and our state requires a state-run rehabilitation centre as private rehabilitation centres are too expensive,” he said.

MPSC NEEDS REVAMP

Suspended Congress MLA Process T. Sawkmie said that the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) should be revamp.

He also requested the government to construct the road from Nongkohlew to Umphrew in his constituency. He also urged the government to upgrade Mawlai Block to Civil Sub-Division.

Turning to traffic congestion, he said, “It is time to go for a fly-over.” NPP MLA, Rakkam A. Sangma expects to get the Baghmara-Maheshkhola to Ranikor road.

He has also requested the government to invest more in the education sector.
