Guwahati implements new online system to streamline traffic congestion

Called Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS), this online tracking system will report traffic violations under SVD (Speed Violation Detection) and TVDS (Traffic Violation Detection System).

GUWAHATI:

In view of the rising traffic offences in the state, the city police under Guwahati Smart City ltd (GSCL) has implemented a new online system to penalise violators.

Called Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS), this online tracking system will report traffic violations under SVD (Speed Violation Detection) and TVDS (Traffic Violation Detection System).

“We are not using any Closed-Circuit TV (CCTV) anymore. From now on, the cameras used to detect traffic violations will stream the live feed to the Command and Control Centre,” Bhaskar Baruah, head of information communication technology (ICT), said.

He said that the completion of the entire system across the city will take about a year, and the estimated cost of the project is Rs 127 crore

“Guwahati city has 49 signalised junctions functioning under fixed time or a manually controlled system. We intend to deploy TVDS in 94 junctions and SVD in 10 locations,” Baruah said.

Baruah further stated that it will be a cutting-edge cloud technology that will significantly reduce road crimes in the city, wherein data will be collected and computed fast and efficiently.

Giving more insights into the new system, as to how the project will work, he said that a command centre will be installed with which various systems of the transportation network will be connected. Suitable interventions will be initiated from the command centre to manage the systems, reduce congestion, deal with incidents, issue advisories or disseminate information.

He also revealed that Guwahati city, which has an area of 216 sq km under the jurisdiction of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and 328 sq km as Guwahati Metropolitan Area (GMA), has seen rapid increase in number of vehicles for which this technology will be implemented.
