HYC raises concerns over alleged harassment by Assam Police in Langpih area

The HYC urged the West Khasi Hills district administration to intervene and engage with Kamrup district authorities in Assam to prevent further occurrences and uphold peace in the disputed border region.

Nongstoiñ:

The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) Rimuliang Circle, on February 9, lodged a complaint with the West Khasi Hills district administration, alleging instances of harassment by Assam police against villagers in the Langpih area.

Diatasbor Wanniang, President of HYC Rimuliang Circle, accused Assam police of routinely stopping and inspecting vehicles traveling through the Kamphoduli-Langpih road without valid reasons. He highlighted an incident of February 6 where plainclothes Assam personnel halted private vehicles, resulting in a confrontation and subsequent confiscation of the vehicles. The villagers had to enlist the assistance of Meghalaya police to retrieve their vehicles.

The HYC urged the West Khasi Hills district administration to intervene and engage with Kamrup district authorities in Assam to prevent further occurrences and uphold peace in the disputed border region. Additionally, they called upon the state government to expedite the second phase of border settlement in the Langpih sector.
