ICCR celebrates 74th Foundation Day

The event commenced with rendition of the National Anthem, followed by lighting of the lamp and felicitation of Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan who was the chief guest, and other dignitaries by ICCR foreign students.

SHILLONG:

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Zonal Office, North East and Sub Zonal Office, Shillong, celebrated its 74th foundation day, on Wednesday, in collaboration with the Department of Arts & Culture, at the U Soso Tham Auditorium, here.

The event commenced with rendition of the National Anthem, followed by lighting of the lamp and felicitation of Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan who was the chief guest, and other dignitaries by ICCR foreign students.

The Jaintia Plate dance, the Garo Wangala dance and the Khasi Shad Mastieh which showcase the rich cultures of the three main tribes of the state were performed. Among other cultural programmes was a dance performance by the Geetanjali Dance Academy and Saraswati Vandana, including a Nepali dance by Kajal Gupta. Dorena group performed the Dinka Dinka dance of South Sudan, while the Buesan group from Tanzania performed an African song.

The Governor informed that Indian culture promotes Vasudev Kutumbakam which means that the entire world is a family, adding, “I would like to express joy to see students from various countries who have come to India for higher studies under the schemes administered by the ICCR on behalf of the Government of India. This will promote peace and brotherhood through culture. I hope that the international students will remember India’s hospitality and continue this friendship throughout their lives.”

N Munish Singh, Zonal Director of ICCR (North East) delivered the welcome address, emphasising the role of ICCR. He said, “The international student community contributes significantly to international relations and become India’s friends. We have gathered to celebrate this diversity, promoted by the ICCR.”

Commissioner and Secretary to the Governor, BDR Tiwari highlighted India’s significant cultural contributions, adding, “No civilisation remains isolated. India has made important contributions in mathematics, astronomy and other fields. I am optimistic that the continued intermingling of cultures will lead to bigger contributions on the cultural front. The role of ICCR, therefore, remains vital to cultural growth.”
