GUWAHATI:
Police seized 350 CFT of illegal teak worth Rs 5 lakh from a truck at Khatkhati in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on October 25, and arrested the driver of the truck in connection with the seizure.
“Based on information received from reliable sources, a police team intercepted a truck bearing registration no NL01 N9417 coming from Manipur to Bokajan side. On being checked, the police found waste cartoon paper, iron scrap and teak wood which were kept concealed inside scrap,” said a senior police officer.
The arrested driver of the truck has been identified as Md Hipjur Rahman (25) son of Md Ijim of Khomidok Sorok Mapal under Heingang police station of Imphal East, Manipur.
According to the police, both National Highway 39 and 36 emerge as transit points of illegal smuggling. Apart from narcotics, gold, and wildlife, Burmese areca nut and pepper are also smuggled into many parts of the country through these routes.
