Justice for women

Sir

“Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” No sir, she responded”. If there is a reason as to why Jesus was killed on the cross it was that he stood up and defended the Samaritan woman and other women in the patriarchal Jewish society which consider women as lesser mortals.

Since the first century AD and during the period of Christ Jesus till today there are socio-religious and political movements for the rights of girl child/women. From the movement for the right to education for girls to the right to work and political empowerment for women. However, in the recent past feminists as well as social progressive groups have been busy fighting against the day-to day battle of abuse, molestation and rape against women. Women are living in fear of the dark as they had been told that the night is not theirs. Many are fearful to venture to work as they may be subjected to molestation. Even the homes are not saved for them as they are subjected to mental and physical abuses. They don’t dare to participate in social and political affairs for fear of name calling etc.

Since the past eight or nine days there is the incident of online trolls/abuses against the young woman from the State and who is reportedly living in Bengaluru at present. The purported “live video chat” of the young woman is being shared and forwarded multiple times and in multiple social media platforms. This purported live video chat which was probably viewed by her primary followers or friends only has now gone viral. Over the past eight or nine days the said woman has been subjected to verbal abuses and vituperation of all kinds. The sharing of the live video chat and the accompanying verbal abuses in multiple social media platforms is nothing but an act of intrusion and violation of her right to privacy and freedom of choice. Besides, the commentaries about her life and being are despicable and unacceptable.

It is disheartening to witness that crime against women seems to be endemic in the state and society, despite the fact that there are laws in place to protect the modesty and dignity of women. The abuses against women, like slut shaming, rape threats and naming them as traitors etc. continue unabatedly both offline and online, and the perpetrators of the crime seems to be happily doing it without remorse or fear of the law.
Dear friends, you are entitled to disagree with what she said and did or you are also free to think that she has hurt yours or “collective” feelings, but you have no moral right to abuse her and even to “sneng” and “kraw” (counsel/teach/moral police) her what to do. The girl and many other girls/women are created in the image of God and they are to be treated with respect and let them live life abundantly.

We are now in the Holy week and on the eve of Good Friday- a day of remembrance of the suffering and death of Christ for the weak, the battered and the oppressed. It is also time to reassure ourselves with hope and move forward in our endeavour and struggle to build a just and equal society. Thus, together we must stand in demanding protection and justice for the woman from the state and many others who are facing abuses and violence.
