Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi

SHILLONG:

Rajya Sabha MP, Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi raised the issue of including Khasi and Garo languages in the 8th Schedule to the Constitution in Parliament on Friday.

“Meghalaya comprises the ethnic groups — Khasi, Garo and Jaintia — who speak in different languages but despite the demand made by the people and a resolution passed in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly for inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the 8th Schedule, nothing was done,” Kharlukhi said.

Stressing on the fact that Meghalaya has completed 50 years of statehood, Kharlukhi said, “I request the government to recognise us by including Khasi and Garo languages in the 8th Schedule to the Constitution.”
