Landslide-hit families asked to shift to safer zone in Tura

Garo Hills has been hit by torrential rain for the past week, the most devastating one occurring early Thursday morning leading to the deaths of four people who were buried alive in two different places, Jebalgre village of Gambegre in West Garo Hills and Betasing in South-West Garo Hills district.

A heavy thunderstorm early Sunday morning caused a landslide in Chandmari area of Tura threatening collapse of the nearby houses and prompting district authorities to seek the evacuation of the inhabitants to a safer zone.

Garo Hills has been hit by torrential rain for the past week, the most devastating one occurring early Thursday morning leading to the deaths of four people who were buried alive in two different places, Jebalgre village of Gambegre in West Garo Hills and Betasing in South-West Garo Hills district.

On Sunday morning, heavy torrential downpour caused a portion of the hill located between Chandmari and Upper Chandmari to collapse leading to a crucial link road to be cut off and posing danger to the homes of people located just above.

The deputy commissioner of West Garo Hills, Swapnil Tembe, who also heads the District Disaster Management Authority, has advised that in view of the landslide that has occurred at Chandmari, Tura around 9 am which affected the dwelling houses of Annie Winda M Sangma and Aminith T Sangma, which are closely located near the landslide area, the family members move to safer place till the monsoon is over and the houses are notified to be safe for dwelling.

The order has been issued as per the Section 34 of The Disaster Management Act, 2005 for the purpose of assisting, protecting or providing relief to the community in response to any threatening disaster situation or disaster. Further, the District Authority can control and restrict the entry of any person or movement within the vulnerable area and take other steps as required in such situations.

Moreover, the District Urban Planner, Urban Affairs Unit, West Garo Hills, Tura and Chief Executive Officer, Tura Municipal Board have been directed to take measures to see the order compiled for prevention while the Executive Engineer PWD (Roads), Tura North Division to take up the restoration and construction works as soon as the situation is favourable.
