Lions Club opens tailoring training centre in city

The centre was inaugurated by the club's district governor, B S Rathore, under the presidentship of Gagan Deorah and other club members.

SHILLONG:

Lions Club Shillong inaugurated a tailoring training centre for women at Laban, on September 24.

The centre was inaugurated by the club’s district governor, B S Rathore, under the presidentship of Gagan Deorah and other club members. A women’s self-help group (SHG) from Madanryting also attended the event.Addressing the inaugural programme, Rathore said, “The Lions Club of Shillong is the oldest from the North East. We as an international club focus on the environment, vision, paediatric cancer, diabetes and hunger. Besides that, we also aim to empower women by promoting SHGs and other young aspirants willing to take up tailoring for a sustainable livelihood.”

Deorah mentioned that the one-of-a-kind project will help all deserving ladies become self-reliant and the project can only be successful with public support.

Bajoplang Kharnuai, the founder of the SHG, said, “Single mothers are grateful that they will receive training from Lions Club. The SHG came in contact with Mrs Anita, one of the members of the club, who showed them ways in which these single women and widows can become financially independent.”

Kharnuai added that the ladies were involved in tailoring activities, however, after bearing children they stopped working. “But since they are still young, they can earn their livelihood.”

The SHG founder further expressed gratitude for the club’s generosity in providing assistance and sponsorship to these single mothers even during the lockdown. The Club’s motive is to provide these single mothers with the opportunity to earn their bread and butter.

The Club is part of 322G, which covers the whole of the eastern region. The area of operation includes Morigaon to Kokrajhar in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram.

The Lions Club is recognised by United Nations and is present in more than 210 countries.
