SHILLONG:

State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Ernest Mawrie has slammed West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee for terming Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an outsider.

“How can you term the prime minister as an outsider? In that way Mamata Banerjee is more of an outsider than him. The origin of TMC is in Kolkata. Why she is giving statements that the prime minister is an outsider is because she is pro-Bangladeshi…she is supporting them,” Mawrie said.

Mawrie said that TMC is based only in West Bengal and the people of Meghalaya will not accept the party.

He also reiterated that TMC’s schemes like Women Empowerment (WE) card and the Meghalaya Youth Empowerment (MYE) card promised for Meghalaya have failed in West Bengal.

Mawrie also claimed that the West Bengal government is the most corrupt in the country.

He also informed that the party will release its manifesto soon after the names of the candidates are announced.

“Manifesto is already prepared. The issues that will be included have already been discussed in Tura during the visit of BL Santhosh when the National General Secretary in-charge organisation was there,” Mawrie said.

He also informed that the prime minister will be visiting the state to address poll rallies either on February 11 or 12.

“He will be visiting Jaintia, Khasi and Garo hills,” Mawrie said.

He also said that apart from Modi, the party will have around 20 star campaigners and prominent among them will be Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Smriti Irani, Nitin Gadkari.

The Meghalaya unit of the BJP on Friday also held their State Election Committee meeting to finalise the names of candidates for the upcoming assembly polls.

Apart from the state party leaders others who were present are – Meghalaya in-charge M. Chuba Ao, Rupam Goswami, party spokesperson from Assam, and legislators Sanbor Shullai and AL Hek.

“We have prepared the list today. We are going to send it to Delhi immediately and within February 2 we are going to declare the tickets,” Mawrie informed.

Mawrie also informed that the BJP will be contesting in all the 60 assembly seats and applications have been received from all the constituencies.

He also informed that in 2018 the party contested from 47 out of the 60 seats and got a vote share of 9.7 per cent.

Mawrie said that as per the party’s assessment their vote share has increased to 20-25 per cent.

“We are expecting that we will win more seats this time so that we can lead the government,” he said.

He also said that the BJP is not planning to have a pre-poll alliance with any party but after the results they will look for like-minded parties which will follow the saffron party’s agenda to have a corruption-free government.

On the issue of Inner Line Permit (ILP), Mawrie said that the state assembly had passed a resolution to urge the Centre to implement it in Meghalaya.

“The central government will take its own course and decide,” he said.

When asked if the BJP will include the agenda of ILP in their manifesto, he did not give a direct reply but only said, “Let us wait for the Centre’s decision.”

Meanwhile, Mawrie also informed that during the recent visit of the officials of the Election Commission of India (ECI) to the state, he had raised the issue of observers coming into Meghalaya not to just sit in Shillong but go to the ground to check the use of money power to influence voters as well as prevent booth capturing.

The party had also complained to the ECI about the WE and MYE sops of the TMC which promise cash benefits to voters if they come to power even as it termed it as inducement to vote for the party.

He also said that the party had complained to the Commission about the National People’s Party’s FOCUS scheme.

“Why FOCUS now before the election. They should have implemented it right from the beginning but they are implementing it only now,” Mawrie added.
