NEW DELHI:

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has claimed that Maoists are trying to make bases in Assam as well as in some selected pockets of other Northeastern states, a development that could set alarm bells ringing in the security establishment across North East.

The development took place following the arrest of a top Maoist leader from North 24 Parganas in West Bengal on September 19.

The NIA arrested 37-years-old Maoist leader Samrat Chakraborty alias Nilkamal Sikdar, who is believed to be the linkman in clandestine communication between the top hierarchy of CPI (Maoist) and another arrested top Maoist leader Kanchan Da alias Arun Bhattacharjee who was operating from his hideout in Assam.

“He (Samrat Chakraborty) had visited Cachar district of Assam on several occasions to assist senior Maoist leader Arun Kumar Bhattacharjee in furthering the activities of the CPI (Maoist) organization in Assam and NE states on the specific instructions of the Eastern Regional Bureau of the party,” an NIA official said.

Monday’s arrest of Samrat relates to the arrest of veteran Maoist leader Kanchan da, West Bengal, a central committee member and an ideologue and strategist of CPI(Maoist) organisation.

The accused, Kanchan da, had been assigned the task to establish the CPI Maoist organisation in Assam and to further spread the roots of the organization in Assam in general and North East in particular, the NIA said.

Earlier on September 2, the NIA had filed chargesheet against six accused persons related to the case in the agency’s special court in Guwahati.

The revelation made by the NIA further substantiated another claim made by a top official of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

Talking to this correspondent the top official from the central para military force said that the Maoists, in the pursuit of searching safe havens, could find Assam and other selected pockets in North East as their new destination.

The CRPF which has been tasked with the anti-Maoist operation in the recent past, carried out a massive flush out operation in Maoist hit Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Jharkhand.

“As they are facing the heat in other states, the Maoists are definitely looking for new bases,” the official said.
