Meghalaya govt cancels all festivals in state due to tense border situation

SHILLONG:
The Meghalaya government has cancelled all upcoming festivals keeping in mind the tense situation in the Meghalaya-Assam border. Atleast 6 people were killed and several injured in the alleged firing incident by Assam police in Mukroh, Laskein Block, Jaintia Hills district on November 22.
The list of festivals that have been called-off include the much awaited Shillong Cherry Blossom festival and others.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui reached Mukroh, Laskein Block, East Jaintia Hills to inspect the situation on ground. Rymbui met police personnel and the family members of the deceased.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma also announced an ex gratia compensation of ₹5 Lakh each to the next of kin the deceased individuals.
“The Cabinet will sit today to decide on the next course of action which the Government will take with regards to this incident,” the Chief Minister tweeted.
