Meghalaya man arrested in Guwahati with 1 kg Pangolin scale

GUWAHATI:

A Meghalaya man was caught selling 1 kg Pangolin scale in Guwahati on the evening of March 16. Identified as Lobai Boro, he is a resident of Golflink in Shillong and the scale was brought from Shillong to Guwahati for trade purposes, the police said.

“Based on the inputs of Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), a joint operation was launched by the officials of Guwahati Range and Protection Range under Kamrup East Division, Basistha on Wednesday evening. The team arrested one Lobai Boro (59) from the backside of Don Bosco School at Sonaighuli while transporting wildlife articles derived from Pangolin,” a senior forest official here said.

During the search operation, one kg of Pangolin scale was recovered from his possession, the official said. A case with offence no- G/163 of 2022 has been registered at the Guwahati Range under the Wildlife Protection Act.

The investigation on the down and uplink of the wildlife trade is on, the official said, adding that there is a big wildlife trade racket is operating in Guwahati.

Pangolin, popularly known as Bonrow in Assam, has high demand in the state and in some South East Asian Countries.
