GUWAHATI:

Two more labourers who had gone missing from a road construction site in Arunachal Pradesh, were rescued on July 24, taking the rescue count to 10, while nine others are still missing.

“Two more labourers were rescued this evening. Four were rescued yesterday and three were rescued on Friday. The search for the remaining 9 labourers is on,” Kurung Kumey Deputy Commissioner Nighee Bengia said.

The labourers were rescued near the Furak river in between Huri, the construction campsite, and Furak village in Damin of Kurung Kumey district.

It was informed that the labourers who hail from Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar and Dhubri districts, have been engaged in the construction of a road for Border Roads Organisation (BRO) from Damin circle in Kurung Kumey district to the China border.

The labourers fled the remote road construction site along the Sino-Indian border on July 5 after they were denied salaries and leave to go home for the Eid festival.

They took off in two-three groups for their homes on foot through jungles. They had taken a shortcut jungle route to return to their homes in Assam.

“Their health condition is not good and medical assistance is being provided. The families have been informed,” Bengia said.

“Their statements will be recorded after their health condition improves,” Bengia added.

According to reports, they were located by villagers on Friday inside a dense forest nearly 20-25 km from Huri in Kurung Kumey district.

Villagers reportedly informed the police that the labourers had left their construction site after the contractor refused to grant leave for some days.

SDRF personnel continued their search operation while the NDRF would soon join the search to locate the missing labourers.

“An IAF chopper conducted search operations during the day but had to be called off due to bad weather. Rescue operations will continue till all the missing persons are rescued,” he said.
