Model Code of Conduct kicks in; carrying cash over Rs 50,000 prohibited

The DEO has also ordered that under section 144 CrPC, it is prohibited for people or groups to carry money above Rs 50,000 in East Khasi Hills District and the same is to be effectively carried out in the district.

District Magistrate-cum-District Election Officer (DEO) East Khasi Hills District Sibhi Chakravarthy Sadhu on January 17 issued a notice that the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced for the conduct of the General Elections to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly 2023 which will be held in the state on February 27.

The notice stated that the model code of conduct and other instructions of the ECI have become operative in Meghalaya after the election announcement. It also added that there will be a check on the bribery of voters during the conduct of any election which will ensure that the voters are able to exercise their right to vote freely and fairly without fear or inducement.

The DEO has also ordered that under section 144 CrPC, it is prohibited for people or groups to carry money above Rs 50,000 in East Khasi Hills District and the same is to be effectively carried out in the district.

Deposit arms

In view of the general elections to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, the District Magistrate, East Khasi Hills in a press release directed all licence holders to deposit their arms and ammunition without fail in the nearest police station/outpost/beathouse during the ongoing model code of conduct enforced in the state. Non-compliance will result in imposition of penalties.
