Mukroh firing incident: CM meets with traditional, religious heads

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Sangma informed that a vehicle carrying timber was pursued by the Assam forest guards along with the state's police and they were detained at Mukroh village.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on November 22 met with traditional heads, religious leaders and citizens of the state and appealed to them to stand together in these difficult times.

“These are challenging times but with society and all of us standing together we will overcome the situation. The government of Meghalaya will be firm and will take whatever necessary action to ensure justice is done. Action will be taken against those people responsible for what has happened,” the Chief Minister said.

Sangma was referring to the incident that had taken place today wherein six people lost their lives after they were shot at by Assam Police in Mukroh village, West Jaintia Hills district. Out of the six people, five were from Meghalaya and one was from Assam.

“The state government strongly condemns the incident wherein the Assam Police and forest guards entered Meghalaya and resorted to unprovoked firing. The government of Meghalaya will take all steps possible to ensure that justice is done and action is taken against all those responsible for this inhumane act,” the Chief Minister said.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with the traditional heads and religious leaders at the state secretariat, Sangma informed that a vehicle carrying timber was pursued by the Assam forest guards along with the state’s police and they were detained at Mukroh village.

The Chief Minister said that on hearing this the people from Mukroh village gathered in large numbers and surrounded the team of Assam Police and forest guards which led to the firing.

“An FIR has been registered by the Meghalaya Police,” Sangma informed.

The injured persons have been shifted to Borato PHC and Ialong Civil Hospital.

On hearing the incident, the district magistrate, the superintendent of police of West Jaintia Hills district rushed to the spot.

The Chief Minister informed state Home Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui has reached the spot.

The names of the deceased are – Thal Shadap (45), Nikasi Dhar (65), S. Talang (55), an unknown male forest guard from Assam, Tal Nartiang (40), and Shirup Sumer (40). The latter two died at the hospitals.

The Chief Minister informed that in respect of the deceased the state government has decided to cancel all festivals including the Cherry Blossom Festival slated to take place from November 24 to 26.

Sangma also informed that an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 5 lakhs will be given to the next of kin of each of the deceased.

Meanwhile, Sangma also appealed to the citizens of the state to pray for the departed souls especially the families who lost their loved ones.

He also appealed to the citizens of the state to maintain peace and harmony in the state.

“The government is taking all steps necessary to ensure that law and order is maintained in the state,” the Chief Minister said.
