On the backdrop of the Mukroh violence, Assam Cabinet, on November 23, decided to set up a Judicial Commission requesting Gauhati High Court Judge Rumi Phukan to conduct a probe into the incident and submit the report within 60 days.

GUWAHATI:

The North East Indigenous People’s Forum (NEIPF), on November 29, urged Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, to make public the report of One-Man Judicial Inquiry Commission led by Gauhati High Court Judge Rumi Phukan set up to probe into causes and circumstances of Mukroh firing incident leaving six persons, including an Assam Forest guard dead.

On the backdrop of the Mukroh violence, Assam Cabinet, on November 23, decided to set up a Judicial Commission requesting Gauhati High Court Judge Rumi Phukan to conduct a probe into the incident and submit the report within 60 days.

The Cabinet also decided to hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to find out the causes and circumstances which led to the firing by Assam Police and forest guards. The CBI is yet to respond to it.

“We have submitted the petition to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma this morning,” said Wellbirth Rani, convenor, Meghalaya Chapter, NEIPF.

“We do not want division among our indigenous communities of Northeast. But the people involved in the incident should get punishment,” Rani said.

In a petition submitted to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday, NEIPF Chief Convenor Anup Chetia, convenor of Meghalaya Chapter NEIPF Wellbirth Rani and secretary of Meghalaya Chapter NEIPF Sadon Blah said, “We are putting this petition before you about the brutal incident which took place at Mukroh in West Jaintia Hills district on November 22 in which six people lost their lives out of which one was a forest guard.”

“We do welcome the immediate steps taken by the Assam government in instituting the judicial inquiry and also the intention to hand over the investigation to independent central agencies but the fact remains that this slaughter by the armed personnel of the Assam government against the innocent villagers is a recurring act which needs to be condemned and stern action needs to be taken so that innocent lives are not becoming the victim of border issues among the two states,” the petition said.

“As NEIPF which stood for the solidarity of all the indigenous people of the region, we will not accept any divisive politics and victimization of our brethren from whatever tribes they might belong. Hence, we put this petition before you that as the government of the indigenous tribe of Northeast to stand united for the security of life and livelihood of the indigenous people of the region,” the petition also said.

“To conclude we request that the Assam government to make public the findings of the judicial inquiry and also the investigation report of any central investigation agency,” it added.
