Nagaon police firing: Dispur suspends SI Pradip Bania, transfers all Narc cops

Government on Tuesday also directed the state’s director general of police (DGP) to dissolve the Anti-Narcotic Squad of Nagaon Police immediately

GUWAHATI:

The government, on February 8, suspended sub-inspector (SI) Pradip Bania and issued transfer orders to all officials of Narcotics Squad of Nagaon Police in connection with the police firing incident on January 22.

Based on the recommendation of a one-man inquiry panel led by additional chief secretary Paban Barthakur, the state government on Tuesday directed the state’s director general of police (DGP) to dissolve the Anti-Narcotic Squad of Nagaon Police immediately.

In a formal order to the DGP, the state home and political department asked to hand over the two cases filed by SI Bania and Kirti Kamal Bora’s father, Neelkamal Bora to Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation. The order, however, asked the DGP not to transfer the superintendent of police Anand Mishra and Bania from the district

The DGP has also been asked to order a departmental probe by a senior police official into the involvement of other policemen in the firing incident.

Earlier on January 22, former Nagaon College Students Union general secretary Kirti Kamal Bora was injured when the sleuths of Anti Narcotic Squad fired at him from a close range at Kachalukahoawa village of Nagaon. Post the incident, the police had claimed that Bora was selling drugs and he was shot in the leg after he attacked the law enforcers.

Succumbing to pressure from the opposition, the state government had constituted a one-man probe panel, who has submitted his report in the last week.
