Murmu appeals for support from state MLAs, MPs

The presidential nominee, who has been travelling across the Northeastern states, seeking support of the legislatures for the upcoming presidential elections on July 18, was received at the Umroi airport by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma along with other political leaders of the state

SHILLONG:

The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Draupadi Murmu, on Wednesday appealed to the MLAs and MPs of the state to extend their support to her in the July 18 election.

Earlier Murmu, who has been travelling across the Northeastern states, seeking support of the legislators, was received at the Umroi airport by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma along with other political leaders, including assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh and BJP leaders.

She was then escorted to the Orchid Lake Resort, Umiam, where she addressed the MLAs and MPs of the state in the presence of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and other dignitaries.

Opposition All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) legislator from Mawsynram Himalaya Shangpliang was one among the MLAs attending the meeting. The AITC, however, has said the party would not support Murmu.

“We are from a tribal state and I feel we should rise above (party) politics. I have not come here to do politics but to express my solidarity with Draupadi. She has urged all 60 legislators to vote in her favour. She will be the first tribal woman (to be president of the country),” said the AITC leader.

“Meghalaya extends its support to NDA’s Presidential Candidate, Smti. Draupadi Murmu Ji.As a tribal community, it will be our honour to offer our support to India’s 1st Indigenous Tribal Woman as our country’s President,” Sangma tweeted.

BJP state vice president Bernard N Marak informed that Murmu during her visit to the state appealed to the MLAs and MPs to vote in favour in the upcoming election.

Stating it is a time for celebration, Marak said, “This is the first time that a tribal is being nominated as the candidate and to be the first tribal lady of the country is a great opportunity.”

“Even the state government, MLAs, MPs have endorsed the idea and hopefully most of our elected representatives will be voting in her favour,” he added.

Meanwhile, Murmu refused to speak to the media persons citing that “I will speak when I come back again”.
