NH-6 stretch to be upgraded to four lanes in East Jaintia Hills: Dy CM

Regarding repairs on NH-6, Tynsong mentioned that he recently met with the Ministry of Road Transport secretary to discuss the poor condition of the highway, particularly from Lumshnong to Umkiang.

SHILLONG:

Deputy Chief Minister in charge of PWD (Roads), Prestone Tynsong, announced on Tuesday that the stretch from Lad Umroi to Malidor along National Highway-6 in East Jaintia Hills District will undergo upgrades to become a four-lane road.

“The project has been handed over to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), and they are currently conducting surveys and coordinating with respective deputy commissioners to identify land,” Tynsong said.

Regarding repairs on NH-6, Tynsong mentioned that he recently met with the Ministry of Road Transport secretary to discuss the poor condition of the highway, particularly from Lumshnong to Umkiang.

“The maintenance and repairs are being handled by NHAI contractors, as this falls under NHAI and NHIDCL jurisdiction,” he clarified.

Addressing concerns about landslides at the Sonapur tunnel, Tynsong stated that the Ministry of Road Transport secretary has shown interest and assured an inspection of the tunnel.

“We don’t have any immediate alternative solutions. Experts sent by the Ministry can only work on protecting the tunnel until the detailed survey for four lanes is completed,” Tynsong emphasized.

He also mentioned the completion of safety audits and retrofitting work on the Sonapur bridge, assuring its current safety status.
