SHILLONG:

National People’s Party (NPP) legislator from Nongstoin, Macmillian Byrsat supports the demand for a separate Khasi-Jaintia state.

“It is my personal view. I agree with the demand for a separate Khasi-Jaintia state,” Byrsat said.

When asked why he supports the demand for a separate Khasi-Jaintia state, he said because the customs and traditions of the Khasis-Jaintias are the same.

According to the Nongstoin legislator, the customs and traditions of other tribes are different from the Khasi-Jaintia.

“I think if we get our own state it will be far better for us,” Byrsat said.

Recently the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), on November 30, sought the support of the 36 legislators and 60 MDCs of the Khasi-Jaintia Hills for the creation of a separate state for the region.

President of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council, Robertjune Kharjahrin on December 5 said that the relation between the people of Khasi-Jaintia Hills and the Indian Union will always remain incomplete without a separate Khasi-Jaintia state.

On October 29, this year thousands of supporters from across the Garo Hills region converged at the Teteng A’ja field, Tura to reignite the call for a separate Garoland state.

The rally was organised by the Garoland State Movement Committee and supported by the Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) as well as National Federation for the New States (NFNS).
