NPP celebrates return to power with felicitation of Conrad and Speaker in Tura

The ruling National People’s Party in Garo Hills presented a colourful felicitation programme at the Tura district auditorium on Thursday for Conrad K Sangma for returning to govern the state for a second term.

TURA:

It was a thanksgiving event to the man who steered his party to victory in the face of a challenging opposition.

The ruling National People’s Party in Garo Hills presented a colourful felicitation programme at the Tura district auditorium on Thursday for Conrad K Sangma for returning to govern the state for a second term.

The felicitation was also extended to North Tura MLA and Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma.

It is worth mentioning that this is the first time in many decades that voters of Tura have returned their sitting legislator for a second consecutive term.

From the early 1990s, since Late Joylance G Momin, Kulert C Momin, Billykid A Sangma, and John Leslee K Sangma, none have ever been able to make it for a second term in office.

“This election has been remarkable because of two things- firstly, Tura voters voted back their sitting legislators, including myself, which has not happened for a very, very long time showing that the people have reposed faith in their elected representatives.

Secondly, this is the first time a record 18 MLAs out of 24 seats went to the NPP in Garo Hills alone, revealing the faith and support the party has been bestowed with by the people of Garo Hills,” the chief minister said.

The chief minister and the Speaker were presented with traditional gifts and mementos including a Garo jacket, sword, and shield, among others.

Terming the 2023 elections as a watershed moment in the election history of the state, Conrad Sangma said that people gave a decisive vote in favour of the NPP.

The Speaker expressed his gratitude to the electorate of North Tura and also thanked the chief minister for giving him the responsibility to lead the Assembly.
