Officials inspect site of fire in South West Garo Hills

The officials reported that there is still some gas coming out of the drilled vent which could be possibly hazardous and put the village residents in and around the particular area, at risk.

AMPATI:

Officials of PHE, District Disaster Management, Police and Fire departments visited Arakgittim to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the fire that erupted from inside a bore well on November 27.

The incident happened when drilling for the bore well (DTW) for Arakgittim and Kentrikona villages combined WSS, under Zikzak C&RD block of South West Garo Hills district was under way.

The officials reported that there is still some gas coming out of the drilled vent which could be possibly hazardous and put the village residents in and around the particular area, at risk.

The PHE official also reported that water turbulence inside the bore well is still prevalent when it was checked on Monday noon. The area has been condoned off by the District Disaster Management for safety and security of the locals. The officials, after inspecting the scenario have necessitated the need to assign an expert team for assessment and necessary testing of the samples.

On Sunday evening, videos of blazing fire at the newly drilled vent went viral. Upon the fire being extinguished by the Fire department, the foamy substance was evidently oozing out and overflowing which led the curious netizens speculating it as volcano. As per the locals, around the year 1975-1976 a team from ONGC came to the site to extract natural oil but left abruptly for reasons unknown.

It may be noted that JJM scheme in the area is being executed by Pratik Agarwal, a contractor from Tura, under turnkey basis.
